EARS Chicago recently honored iconic engineer, producer, and music legend Phil Ramone during the recording group’s monthly meeting. The event was held at the Shure Theater in Niles, Illinois on May 3, 2012 in collaboration with Columbia College. The many attendees enjoyed an evening of music, revelry, studio lore, and the presentation of the EARS Black Diamond Honorary Member Award to Ramone for his more than 50 years of contributions to the recording industry. The Award reads:

Presented to Phil Ramone
To commemorate his contribution advancing excellence
in the art of audio / media production
EARS – the Engineering and Recording Society of Chicago
Lifetime Achievement Award
“EARS Black Diamond Honorary Member”
May 3rd, 2012

Ramone has produced some of the biggest hit records of all time for artists such as Frank Sinatra, Bob Dylan, Elton John, Paul McCartney, Aretha Franklin, Amy Winehouse, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Barbara Streisand, Dionne Warwick, and Ray Charles, to name a few. He also recently won three Grammy Awards in 2012 for producing Tony Bennett’s Duets II.

One of the little known facts is that Ramone was on hand to record Marilyn Monroe singing the infamous “Happy Birthday Mr. President” to John F. Kennedy. Few can lay claim to something so audacious.

The members of EARS wish to thank Shure for hosting this event. Special thanks to Shure’s Dean Giavaras, Mike Lohman, Dave Mendez, Mark Brunner and Gino Sigismondi.
