New York, NY (October 3, 2017)—With dozens of gold and platinum album credits between them, the METAlliance (Music Engineering and Technical Alliance) is returning to New York City later this month to host one of its rare “In Session with the Guys” educational events October 21-22 at the legendary Power Station at BerkleeNYC Studios (formerly Avatar Studios and The Power Station).
The METAlliance—award-winning production pros Chuck Ainlay, Ed Cherney, Frank Filipetti, George Massenburg, Elliot Scheiner and Al Schmitt—will run live recording and mixing sessions with notable acts, explaining and educating attendees as to how and why they make every choice. Every attendee will participate in four sessions, each designed to provide different experiences in the recording process and led by the founding members. Amenities include lunch and giveaways
At previous “In Session with the Guys” events, articipants got a close-up look at basic tracking and mic techniques; in the separate mixing sessions they were engaged in the processes in significant detail and participated in critical listening. “This was simply a great experience for all of us,” commented co-founder George Massenburg. “Working hard with a very diverse group of students, pros, educators and recording beginners.”

In Studio A, jazz singer/songwriter Kat Edmonson’s session will be tracked and mixed. “I’ve worked with Kat on a few of her recordings. She is an amazing singer and songwriter and a lot of fun in the studio. A total professional,” says Schmitt, who mixed Edmonson’s first album. “We’ll be recording tracks for her new album, so this is a unique chance to see a true artist making great music in the studio.” Her most recent record The Big Picture debuted at #1 on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums Chart, #1 on Contemporary Jazz Chart and #2 on the Total Jazz Chart. The album was recorded with Grammy-nominated producer Mitchell Froom in his Los Angeles studio.
In Studio G, Elliot Scheiner will record a capella act New York Voices. “I’ve recorded two albums with this group and their vocal talents are astonishing,” said Sheiner. “For attendees, this will be a unique opportunity to see and hear how we capture a capella voices for their upcoming album.” Founding member and musical director Darmon Meader adds, “We are thrilled to be working with Elliot once again! He continues to be one of our favorite studio gurus. We thank Elliot for inviting us to join him in the studio, and look forward to meeting the METAlliance attendees. It should be a fun experience for all of us.”
Over in Studio C, Chuck Ainlay and producer Tony McAnany will work with The Nectars on a session that will highlight how to record pop singles for a major motion picture while addressing the needs of a record label, and most importantly capturing the unique music and narrative identity of the band. “Producers are always balancing context and identity, so we are going to approach the session like we are under the gun to deliver music to a director who wants a new sound for an upcoming film and to a label president who needs the single ASAP for radio,” remarked producer Tony McAnany. “Real life intensity with a truly special new band.”
Established in 2005, the METAlliance (Music Engineering and Technology Alliance) was founded by globally-recognized, award-winning audio engineers and producers Chuck Ainlay, Ed Cherney, Frank Filipetti, George Massenburg, Elliot Scheiner, Al Schmitt, and the late Phil Ramone. The METAlliance works with educators to help insure the skills and techniques that have developed through the history of recording are carried forward.
