Los Angeles, CA (December 9, 2020)—Grammy-winning mix engineer Derek “MixedByAli” Ali and business partner Daniel P. Maynard have purchased the former recording studio of 1990s hip-hop mainstay Death Row Records. Numerous landmark albums of the era, including Snoop Dogg’s The Doggfather, Tupac Shakur’s All Eyez on Me, and Dr. Dre’s 2001, were recorded at the facility, which has now been rechristened NoName Studio.
In an Instagram post that began “This is the most exciting news I’ve announced since the birth of my daughter,” Ali announced the acquisition, adding that NoName will undergo major renovations over the next two months. When complete, the site will consist of two mixing rooms that will be focused around Solid State Logic desks and Augspurger monitors, and will additionally house the offices of the EngineEars workshop series and online community/mixing service.
Citing the studio as the birthplace of “…records that shaped my childhood and inspired me to create the music I make today, being from the west coast,” Ali’s post included a speedy, gear-filled video walk-through of the facility, with boxes, keyboards and more stacked everywhere.

“We’re looking forward to harnessing the energy & history from this studio and [plan to] continue pumping out nothing but timeless hit records just as they did in the 90s,” Ali wrote in the post.
Ali will go into that effort with a lot of momentum behind him; since starting to work with Top Dawg Entertainment in 2010, he has been nominated for six Grammys and won twice (Best Rap Album 2015, for Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, and Record of the Year 2018, for Childish Gambino’s “This is America”).
